Preserving Fresh Pears

The core production areas feature a warm temperate monsoon climate, with abundant light and heat resources and suitable temperature differences between day and night, which facilitates the accumulation of sugar and flavor substances. Irrigated with underground water from the Wulong River that is rich in metasilicic acid, and nurtured in an ecologically clean environment free from industrial pollution, these factors jointly contribute to the unique quality of Laiyang Pears. Standardized cultivation practices are implemented in the regions: over 20,000 mu of standardized demonstration orchards have been established, and 13,000 mu of old and inferior orchards have been renovated, ensuring consistent fruit quality from the source.

The fruits are obovate or elliptical, with regular and plump shapes, thin and short fruit stems, and deep, broad calyx depressions, giving them high recognizability. When ripe, the fruits exhibit uniform and translucent color; the surface is smooth and clean, covered with a natural waxy layer, dotted with sparse and tiny lenticels, and free from rust spots or damages. With fresh and elegant overall color, Laiyang Pears have strong appeal for shelf display.

The flesh is as white as jade, tender, compact and residue-free, melting instantly in the mouth. It is known for the characteristic of "sweet with a hint of sourness, refreshingly sweet without greasiness". Bursting with abundant juice upon biting, the fruit has a high juice yield, with soluble solid content reaching over 12%-its sugar content is 2–3 percentage points higher than that of ordinary pears. Boasting pure, refreshing sweetness and a unique natural fruit aroma that is soft and long-lasting, the well-balanced sweet-sour ratio caters to the taste preferences of consumers from diverse regions, making Laiyang Pears a representative of high-quality fresh-eating pears.

Laiyang Pears are rich in nutritional components including soluble dietary fiber, polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids. These nutrients can promote intestinal peristalsis and help maintain the balance of intestinal microecology; the high-potassium and low-sodium trait is conducive to stabilizing blood pressure; and the fruit also has outstanding antioxidant capacity. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is cool in nature and sweet in taste, capable of promoting fluid secretion to relieve dryness, clearing lung heat to alleviate cough, and has an auxiliary effect on relieving dry and itchy throat as well as cough caused by lung heat. With a glycemic index of only 36, it is suitable for moderate consumption by most groups of people.

Pre-cooling treatment is completed within 24 hours after harvest, followed by storage in low-temperature cold storage at 0–2℃ with humidity controlled at 90–95%. The preservation period can reach 3–5 months, enabling stable year-round supply to meet the continuous procurement needs of overseas markets.
